Hardware & Software Specifications
Participating in a distance education program requires a computer and other peripherals including a microphone, speakers, and a camera capable of taking pictures and recording videos. Fully operational desktop computers or laptops are necessary to be successful in online learning. Mobile devices such as smartphones or tablets are not fully compatible with all tools in Canvas, and therefore not recommended.
Canvas and its hosting infrastructure are designed for maximum compatibility and minimal requirements. Therefore, your computer should have at least the following minimum specifications:
- A minimum of 1024x600. That is the average size of a netbook. You probably won't want to view Canvas on a smaller screen than that.
- Windows XP SP3 and newer
- Mac OSX 10.6 and newer
Computer Speed and Processor
- 2GB of RAM
- 2GHz processor
- Use a computer 5 years old or newer when possible
Students should have at least a 1.5 Mbps Internet connection (upload and download speeds) as a minimum requirement. To check your internet connection, click here (Links to an external site.) and then select Go/Begin Test to test your Internet speed connection.
For best performance, Canvas should be used on the current or first previous major release of Chrome, Firefox, Edge, or Safari. However, CHCP recommends that you use either Mozilla Firefox or Chrome. Click on the links below to download the latest version of the web browser of your preference.
